Last summer I asked my kids if they had ever watched the sun rise. Not being a morning person myself, I was not the least bit surprised to learn that they had not been up early enough to view the magnificant sun emerge to begin a new day.
At the end of the summer I am always scrambling to get everyone back on the early morning routine, which is a stretch for this mama as well. So, two days before school began I planned an early morning wake-up surprise that I coined, "Here Comes the Sun" (which I also figured would get our body clocks reprogrammed for early school departures).
My husband, who commutes to work and gets to observe the sun rise on a daily basis, knew just the time and place for us to witness this event.
We woke the kids and all hopped into the car in our jammies, blankets and dog in tow. We headed for a quick detour to the local doughnut drive-through and ordered maple bars and hot cocoa to celebrate the occasion. We drove to an ideal sunrise viewing location in our town, turned on our "Sun" playlist that consisted of The Beatles' Here Comes the Sun and Colbie Caillat's Brighter Than The Sun, Weezer's Island In the Sun, Aqualung's Brigther Than Sunshine and Smash Mouth's Walkin' On the Sun...among others.
And we waited for the sun's arrival.
It was amazing.
Unforgettable.
We loved it.
I highly recommend you do this. Tomorrow!
This will become a new annual tradition in our family.
Not only was it grounding but a great reminder of what amazing natural wonders we have to behold if we take the time to SLOW DOWN.
